Different Earring Styles: Types, Pros, Cons - Pure Whimsy Jewelry

How to Find Your Perfect Earring Style

I mostly make “dangle” earrings, but a client reached out recently asking if I could convert one of my dangle designs into a pair of drop earrings.  It got me thinking a lot about earrings, and I realized there's such a wide variety out there that it can get a bit overwhelming. Even though most people know the difference between a hoop and a stud, many don’t always know the difference between a drop and a dangle, or who might look best in what kind of earring. So here is a blog post about different earring types, the pros and cons, what makes each one special, and who they look best on.

Stud Earrings

What They Are: Stud earrings have a post and sit directly on the ear.  They usually have a single gemstone or small design that sits directly on the earlobe.

Pros:

Super versatile—you can wear them with literally anything.

Lightweight and comfy, so they're perfect for everyday wear.

if you have more than one hole, they look great with other earrings.

Cons:

If you have long hair they can get lost and not be seen.

Best For: Honestly, everyone! They suit all face shapes and ages and are especially great if you're always on the go, don’t like changing your earrings, or love a simple, understated look.

Dangle Earrings

What They Are: Dangle earrings hang below the earlobe and typically move a lot, hence the name dangles. They can range from simple to intricate designs and often feature multiple components.

Pros:

Drama: Dangle earrings make a bold statement and can stand out.

Versatility: Available in various lengths and styles, from simple to elaborate.

Dynamic Movement: They sway and move, drawing attention and adding a playful element to your look.

Cons:

Weight: Like other types of earrings, dangle earrings can be heavy, depending on the design.

Snagging: Their length and movement can lead to more frequent snagging on hair or clothing.

Short Neck: People with short necks often have trouble wearing dangles due to lack of room between the earlobe and shoulder.

Best For:

Oval and Round Faces: The length and movement of dangle earrings add angles and definition, complementing softer face shapes.

Easy to find: Dangles are the most popular style of earring, therefore the easiest to find what you might be looking for.

Drop Earrings

What They Are:.Drop earrings hang just below the earlobe and typically consist of a single piece or a simple design that doesn’t move In other words, there isn’t a separate hook- either the earring has a post or an attached hook. there may be a dangling stone or bead at the end of the drop.

Pros:

Elegance: They add a touch of sophistication to any outfit, perfect for dressing up.

Variety: You can find them in endless styles and lengths, from subtle to statement pieces.

Movement: They provide a gentle sway that draws attention to your neck and shoulders.

Cons:

Weight: Some designs can be heavy, which might be uncomfortable for long periods.

Snagging: Their length can sometimes get caught on clothes or hair.

Best For:

Square and Heart-Shaped Faces: The vertical line of drop earrings can help elongate and balance out angular features.

Formal Events: Ideal for special occasions where you want to add a touch of elegance and sophistication.

Chandelier Earrings

What They Are: Chandeliers are elaborate earrings that branch out like a chandelier, usually featuring gemstones

Pros:

Super dramatic and eye-catching.

Exude glamour and are perfect for special occasions.

Available in tons of intricate designs.

Cons:

Can be quite heavy.

Sometimes, they can overshadow the rest of your look.

Best For: These are best for oval faces as they complement the natural symmetry. Ideal for weddings, galas, or any event where you want to make a statement.

Hoop Earrings

What They Are: Hoops are circular open earrings available in almost any size.

Pros:

Super versatile—can be dressed up or down.

Help frame your face beautifully.

Cons:

Big hoops can get heavy and might feel uncomfortable after a while.

If you have long hair, it might get tangled in them sometimes.

Best For: These are amazing for oval and long faces. Everything goes with an oval and they balance a long face.

Huggie Earrings

What They Are: Huggies are small hoop earrings that 'hug' the earlobe closely. They have a hinge on the bottom as part of the mechanism for opening and closing them.

Pros:

Super comfortable and perfect for daily wear.

Secure fit, so they're great if you're active.

Offer a subtle elegance.

Cons:

Their small size means they might not stand out as much.

Fewer design options compared to other earring types.

Best For: Perfect for anyone with an active lifestyle. These little beauties suit all face shapes and add just the right amount of sparkle.

Ear Climbers and Cuffs

What They Are: Ear climbers start at the earlobe and "climb" up the ear, while cuffs wrap around the outer ear and don’t require piercings.

Pros:

Super trendy and unique.

Ear cuffs don’t need piercings, so anyone can wear them.

You can wear them in different parts of the ear for a customized look.

Might be uncomfortable if not fitted well.
