Different Earring Styles: Types, Pros, Cons - Pure Whimsy Jewelry

Let’s Talk Earrings: Finding Your Perfect Style

I mostly make “dangle” earrings, but a client reached out recently asking if I could convert one of my dangle designs into a pair of drop earrings.  It got me thinking a lot about earrings, and I realized there's such a wide variety out there that it can get a bit overwhelming. Even though most people know the difference between a hoop and a stud, many don’t always know the difference between a drop and a dangle, or who might look best in what kind of earring. So here is a blog post about different earring types, the pros and cons, what makes each one special, and who they look best on.

Stud Earrings

What They Are: Stud earrings have a post and sit directly on the ear.  They usually have a single gemstone or small design that sits directly on the earlobe.

Super versatile—you can wear them with literally anything.

Lightweight and comfy, so they're perfect for everyday wear.

if you have more than one hole, they look great with other earrings.

If you have long hair they can get lost and not be seen.

Best For: Honestly, everyone! They suit all face shapes and ages and are especially great if you're always on the go, don’t like changing your earrings, or love a simple, understated look.

Dangle Earrings

What They Are: Dangle earrings hang below the earlobe and typically move a lot, hence the name dangles. They can range from simple to intricate designs and often feature multiple components.

Drama: Dangle earrings make a bold statement and can stand out.

Versatility: Available in various lengths and styles, from simple to elaborate.

Dynamic Movement: They sway and move, drawing attention and adding a playful element to your look.

Weight: Like other types of earrings, dangle earrings can be heavy, depending on the design.

Snagging: Their length and movement can lead to more frequent snagging on hair or clothing.

Short Neck: People with short necks often have trouble wearing dangles due to lack of room between the earlobe and shoulder.

Best For:

Oval and Round Faces: The length and movement of dangle earrings add angles and definition, complementing softer face shapes.

Easy to find: Dangles are the most popular style of earring, therefore the easiest to find what you might be looking for.
