Enamel Jewelry

This is my collection of handmade enamel jewelry, pieces where I get to paint with glass and fire. I was a painter long before I became a metalsmith, starting in watercolors and then oils, and enamel is how I finally brought the two together, a way of painting and making jewelry at the same time. Each one is a small talisman for anyone who lives for color.

I started working in enamel because it let me capture the vibrant colors of flowers, and the subtler colors of nature, in a way that silver alone never could. And I will always be a silversmith at heart, so I love finding ways to add silver back in, laying fine silver wire into the glass for detail and dimension. These pieces are my two lives, painter and metalsmith, fused into one.

Made by hand, painted in glass and fire

Enamel is finely ground glass, fused to metal with heat. I work on copper, sifting enamel onto both the front and the back of a piece, firing it in the kiln, and repeating that to build an even, stable base.

Once the foundation is set, I add the design, hand painting or applying it, and often lay in fine silver wire to draw out detail and dimension. Then it goes back into the kiln to fuse, sometimes with a final clear coat for depth and protection. Every firing melts the glass into a smooth, luminous surface, permanently bonded to the copper, so the color will not fade, peel, or wash away.

What is enamel jewelry?

Enamel is finely ground glass, fused to metal with heat. Each piece is coated, kiln fired, and built up in layers until the glass becomes a smooth, luminous surface permanently bonded to the metal. Because the color is glass and not paint, it will not fade, peel, or wash away.

Are these pieces handmade?

Yes. I sift the enamel, fire each piece in the kiln, hand paint or apply the design, and often lay in fine silver wire for detail, all by hand in my studio, one piece at a time. I was a painter long before I became a metalsmith, and enamel is how I bring both together.

Will the enamel chip or fade?

The color will never fade, because it is glass permanently fused to the metal, not a paint or coating that can wear off. Enamel is glass, so like any fine piece it is happiest kept from very hard knocks, and it is made to be worn and enjoyed, often finished with a clear protective coat.
